UJ Stadium ready to be the home of champions

As the count down to the most anticipated university rugby tournament continues, we put the spotlight on one of the playing facilities hosting some of the exhilarating FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International action in 2016.

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) has been competing in the Monday night competition since its inception and has been known to put on a spectacular showcase both on and off the field. UJ will be playing a minimum of seven matches, and of those seven matches, will be hosting four of them at UJ Stadium in the suburb of Westdene, Johannesburg.

UJ Stadium is a multi-sports stadium facility and is mainly used for rugby games, however it is also the home of the UJ Athletics Club and was used as an official training venue during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. It has the capacity to accommodate just over 8 000 spectators comfortably, and the organisers are expecting it to be populated with orange as supporters fill it up in support of their Boytjies.

The FNB UJ side will kick off its “Back Your Boytjies” campaign with a home game against The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) Madibaz, on February 8, 2016, and will be led by Kobus Porter, under the guidance of coach Werner Janse van Rensburg.

Tickets to each of the FNB UJ home games will be sold for R20 at all four UJ Gymnasiums situated on each campus: Auckland Park Campus (APK), Auckland Park Bunting Road Campus (APB), Doornfontein Campus (DFC) and Soweto Campus (SWC). Spectators are urged to buy pre-sold tickets as the entrances tend to be congested on match day. They are further urged to make use of the free shuttle service which will be operating to and fro First Years’ Parking (APK) and UJ Stadium in regular intervals in order to avoid the frustrations of limited parking space and road closures around the stadium.

The public is urged to come out in their numbers, wearing their supporters’ orange t-shirts, ready to watch some Rugby That Rocks, win some give-aways and experience rugby the UJ way.
