Denver Kalomo, July 2016
As a former Public Relations and communication student at University of Johannesburg (UJ), my life has changed tremendously; I am now more independent and responsible. The city experience in Johannesburg required me to be emotionally and psychologically stable in living alone and doing well at university. I adapted to my new environment by making new friends; this helped me feel less home sick and less lonely.
2015 was a year of learning how to balance my finances, studies, health, relationships, and plan my career – this has been challenging and overwhelming, but my character has developed positively after going through everything.
UJ has provided me with a professional and engaging environment. I loved my lecturers; they were enthusiastic, industry leaders in their own right. Third year Students studying a Public Relations and Communication qualification at University of Johannesburg get the opportunity to advance through the work integrated learning experience (WIL) programme. The WIL programme allowed me to gain practical experience in the Public Relations field; to shadow experienced professionals, and advance my skill set.
UJ is so cool, it provides students with good quality computer labs, sporting facilities, arts & culture, libraries and other academic related resources on all of its four campuses. Through using all of these awesome facilities not only could I achieve academically but as a well-rounded individual too.
When choosing a university, you need to consider a number of factors such as; programmes on offer, student employment percentage after graduating, national and global university ratings. It is also important that you compare these factors to your personal career plan and growth; this means you need to do research before choosing a university. Don’t just follow the crowd!
Remember to always stay optimistic, positive and keep the company of people who inspire you to be better a better individual.
